New materials are designed with luminescent properties to detect skin tumours

This project, which is still at the experimental stage, is being carried out by researchers in Signal and Communications Theory from URJC. Up to the present, they have synthesised and characterised upconversion materials, which are effective in the detection of cancer cells, and they have managed to develop an attenuation model for human fibres. Thanks to this model, they have made simulations of a melanoma with a combination of the particles synthesised on the surface of the tumour at different depths of the tissue. Next, the researchers will begin to carry out studies ex situ using samples of dermis from pigs, with the aim of studying the materials in real systems.
